3-2-1-Launch! Red-shouldered Hawk by arcadian7 3-2-1-Launch! Red-shouldered Hawk by arcadian7
I am nearly positive this is a female - there was another bird a bit smaller that I believe to be a male seen the same day and flying around each other. I need to read up on a RS courtship displays and see if at this time they are coming in to claim territory for nesting.

PLEASE DO NOT USE WITHOUT MY PERMISSION!!

You're welcome :) I love seeing birds of prey in flight, but I've never seen a shot just when they're taking off, it's awesome.

I had the privilege of sitting in my window camera ready and just waited with finger on the button. I keep trying to master flight shots and this was a total fluke!

:D That always seems to happen! You do something awesome and half the time with me, no one's around to see it :|
I love birds of prey, I could just sit for an hour or two looking at pictures. That and reptiles.
Ok, most animals...

raptors are my faves of all the birds - maybe because they remind me most of dinosaurs - my other obsession!

:D I love the peregrine falcon, the right size for to hold, and so beautiful!
And panda wise, one the size of a small elephant would be great. Battle panda :la:

Wonderful capture! I've only seen one red shouldered hawk in my area. I'm hoping I get to see it more often.

thank you. You will enjoy them - they are quite personable birds - very vocal too. I have to read up on whether or not these birds return to the same nesting area year after year. We had a pair last season that produced two chicks - over a two to three week period after they fledged (and no, I have no idea where the nest actually was or I would have visited on a daily basis) - they almost seemed to "play tag" with each other one chasing the other from tree to tree then they would sit close and "talk" to each other. Wished I had video of them!

That sounds amazing to watch! I've seen my fair share of red tails here. (As in, I saw about 9 of them yesterday alone along the highway). So I pretty much have most of their behaviors down, but I can't seem to find many red shoulders. The only one I've seen was in a neighboring town. I'll have to keep an eye (and ear!) out for some!

thank you - I had to wait a good 15-20 minutes before the bird decided to launch off her branch into another part of the yard.
